A parathyroid adenoma is a benign tumour which results in the over production of parathyroid hormone (PTH). This increased level of hormone causes high levels of calcium to circulate in the blood stream. The calcium is released from the bones and prevented from being excreted by the kidneys. Symptoms include joint, muscle, and abdominal pain, as well as depression, constipation and exhaustion. Long term high calcium can lead to thinning of the bones (osteoporosis) and kidney stones.
A simple blood test checking the level of calcium in the bloodstream is the first step in diagnosis. Further blood tests, as well as imaging to help identify the position of the adenoma, will then be arranged. Once localisation of the adenoma has been confirmed surgical excision of the benign tumour takes place.
